Surgical Considerations - Post Herpetic Neuralgia

Post Herpetic Neuralgia pain may disappear spontaneously within the first one to two years, so no surgical intervention is initially needed.  It is a trigeminal neuropathic problem because it is the result of damage to the nerve.

Most neurosurgeons advise against any surgery which would further injure the nerve.  Destructive surgery includes Radiosurgery, glycerol injections, balloon compression and radiofrequency rhizotomy.  Neurostimulation is the only current surgical procedure available; regardless of whether it is effective or not because it is not harmful to the nerve.
