Transcript: Continuous burning sensations in the mouth
Burning mouth syndrome is an older term that we’re trying to move away from simply because along with that term comes an immediate association with old ideas about who gets it. The old ideas being that this is a somatic form disorder or that it is a psychological disorder and a disorder that grows out of depression and is also seen as one of several somatic form symptoms in women going through menopause. None of those things have proven to be true. In fact, several of them have been proven to be untrue. So we don’t like to use that term.
The presence of burning sensations in the mouth is consistent with what we would call stomatodynia which is burning in the mouth and the most contemporary views of that see that as another neuropathic pain condition. Continuous burning sensation that is due to misbehavior of the nervous system.
