Transcript: The Internet -- a resource
The Internet can be a great resource for finding out about trigeminal neuralgia and potential treatments for search options and even clinicians that have expertise to treat this particular condition. Some of the resources that are reliable I believe and that are easily found on the Internet are the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association web page and also the association web pages for the two national professional neurosurgical organizations in the US: The American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
In particular, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons has a subsection which is accessible to all called Neurosurgical University. It has a list of various neurological problems of which trigeminal neuralgia is listed and discussed. There are resources there that explain the various treatment options and also links to PubMed which is the National Medical Library accessible database that allows you to actually look at those papers that have been published in a peer reviewed format. That is has been published by physicians and have been reviewed by physicians and deemed to be credible references.
I always caution patients that the Internet has some very, very good and easily accessible information but also can have some unreliable information. It’s important to go to sites that have credibility and the ones I mentioned certainly do.
