Transcript:  If a microvascular decompression fails, what’s next?

Now microvascular decompression is a procedure that depends extremely on the expertise of the surgeon.  If you’ve had excellent relief the first time with the microvascular decompression and you come back three to four years later and now you have a recurrence but the surgery was done very well.  You had good relief.  Chances are that the second microvascular decompression is not necessarily going to be very much favorable to you in the long-term.  So in those cases, I’m going to consider either glycerol or Gamma Knife.

But let’s say you had the microvascular decompression done and you never had the relief at all and moreover it was not done by a surgeon who does it on a more frequent basis.  Microvascular decompression is a highly, highly, sophisticated technical procedure.  Very much dependent on the experience of the surgeon.  So therefore if it was done by somebody that a person would not think may have explored as deeply as possible, I’ll probably explore in those cases.
