Transcript: Repeating the glycerol rhizotomy
One of the biggest advantages of glycerol is actually the fact that it can be repeated. And in some cases, especially with Multiple Sclerosis, those who are not willing to have anything done, other procedures done, I have done it as many as seven times.
There are patients with MS who are miserable with pain. They want a quick relief and they want to have it right then. Now I have some MS patients who actually will call my office, about a year or two later, that they’ve had a pain recurrence, and they want to come in and get the injection done and go home.
I’ve actually noticed that the sensory deficit, the numbness, with glycerol in MS patients is not noticed as frequently in my practice and I don’t have a good reason but I do notice that you can repeat the glycerol a lot.
One of the very interesting things about glycerol actually is that most people do agree that for the first division pain when you don’t want to lose the corneal sensation, glycerol is actually preferred over Radiofrequency procedures. And Radiofrequency procedures you actually have to get the first division which will lead to numbness so most people will not do that. But I have done glycerol for first division pain when that was the only procedure that they could have had and with fairly good results.
