Transcript: How to find an orofacial pain practitioner
Finding an orofacial pain practitioner such as myself may not always be easy because there’s not a lot of us trained and practicing within the U.S. There’s two large professional groups within dentistry that do have people, they’re members usually, that treat neuropathic pains. Those tend to be the Academy of Orofacial Medicine so the acronym is AAOM as well as The Academy of Orofacial Pain so AAOP. Both of those academies websites have directories where you can find someone who is registered with them that may be local to where you’re at.
Other ways of looking at it is don’t be afraid to be ask the dentist that you’re considering having care with about credentials, about referrals and references. A good way of understanding whether someone has a large background and a lot of knowledge is are they associated with the university? Are they teaching this topic within the university? Are they writing articles on that? Are they being highly referred by other specialists in the same area? Those can be really good resources and things that you can ask to see if that care provider may be a little bit better than the average person on the street.
