Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an outpatient treatment.  An electromagnet is placed on the scalp that sends magnetic pulses to the brain.  Some speculate those with trigeminal neuropathic pain who respond favorably to this stimulation may also respond well to neurostimulation, so it sometimes used as a pretest.

A clinical trial is now underway using TMS for trigeminal neuralgia—information can be found here.
