Nerve Blocks
Nerve blocks are done by injecting a local anesthetic and sometimes steroids into specific sites on various nerves. The affected area becomes numb after the injection. The goal is to provide longer term pain relief after the temporary numbness subsides.
A nerve block is seldom done in the emergency room (ER), so if it is to be considered for pain relief, it is advisable to establish a relationship with a practitioner prior to an acute pain episode.
