Transcript: The search for pain relief
I think the search for pain relief is an on-going thing. You know, 10-15% of our patients don’t even live in Texas. (I do some writing on pain and headache websites.) We get them for a few days. These people spend money, time, and energy. They are anxious about the next set of treatments. But on average, we try to help them and we do. And unfortunately the search for a physician that will be more aggressive perhaps, more forward thinking is not an easy one. You’re not going to find them in every city, in every community. People do have to travel and they do spend a lot of time and energy in search for relief. And that unfortunately is part of the cumbersome process.
But I think that and bringing in other colleagues that can help with relaxation strategies, biofeedback, acupuncture, hypnosis in some cases, progressive relaxation, tai-chi, meditation, all of these things can be useful adjuncts to medications. I think that these should not be overlooked as well.
Often these things get called complementary and alternative therapies. They’re really not. They are part in parcel of an overall comprehensive multi-disciplinary way of helping tone down pain.
